✝️ Feast Day – October 17 ✝️ Today the Church honours St. Ignatius of Antioch, an early Christian bishop, Apostolic Father and martyr who lived during the first century. He served as Bishop of Antioch, one of the most important centres of early Christianity, and is traditionally believed to have been a disciple of the Apostle John. Ignatius devoted his life to guiding the Christian community, strengthening the faithful and preserving the teachings handed down by the Apostles. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Trajan, Ignatius was arrested and sentenced to death. He was transported from Antioch to Rome under military guard, and along the journey he wrote a series of letters to Christian communities, including those in Ephesus, Rome and Smyrna. These writings offer invaluable insight into the beliefs and practices of the early Church, particularly the importance of the Eucharist, the authority of bishops and the unity of Christians. Ignatius also urged the faithful to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of suffering. Ignatius ultimately suffered martyrdom in Rome, traditionally around the year 107, where he was thrown to wild beasts. Rather than fear his approaching death, he expressed his desire to remain faithful to Christ, famously describing himself as God’s wheat, ground by the teeth of wild beasts so that he might become pure bread for Christ. The feast of St. Ignatius of Antioch reminds us of the courage required to remain faithful to Christ when faced with hardship. His writings call Christians to unity, reverence for the Eucharist and unwavering love for Jesus. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire the Church to hold firmly to the faith passed down through the Apostles. #StIgnatiusOfAntioch #FeastDay #EarlyChurch #Catholic #Martyr
