THE NUN WHO WALKED AGAIN AFTER NEARLY 40 YEARS OF DISABILITY She had endured decades of severe pain, undergone multiple operations, and depended on a wheelchair and medical devices. Then, after a pilgrimage to Lourdes, Sister Bernadette Moriau suddenly found herself able to walk again. Her name was Sister Bernadette Moriau, a French Franciscan nun whose healing became the 70th officially recognized miracle of Lourdes. Her suffering began in 1966, when she developed a serious condition affecting the nerve roots in her lower spine. Over the years, her condition progressively worsened. She underwent four spinal operations between 1968 and 1975, but her health continued to deteriorate. By 1980, she had been declared permanently disabled. She needed a wheelchair, wore a leg brace, and relied on medical devices to manage her condition. Severe pain also required powerful medication, including morphine. For years, she lived with limitations that prevented her from carrying out many ordinary activities. Then, in 2008, Sister Bernadette joined a diocesan pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in southern France. She did not travel there demanding a miracle. She went as a pilgrim, participating in the prayers, penitential practices, Eucharistic celebrations, and visits to the Grotto where St. Bernadette Soubirous had reported seeing the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1858. During the pilgrimage, she received the Anointing of the Sick and participated in the blessing of the sick. But the extraordinary change came after she returned home. On July 11, 2008, Sister Bernadette spent time in prayer and Eucharistic adoration in her convent chapel. Afterwards, she returned to her room and experienced an unexpected sensation of well-being, warmth, and relief. She felt compelled to remove her medical supports. She took off her corset and leg brace and stopped using her neurostimulator. Then she discovered something she had not experienced for decades. She could move without the limitations that had governed her life for nearly 40 years. She was able to walk independently, without her usual aids, and no longer experienced the debilitating pain that had accompanied her condition. Her recovery was not simply accepted without examination. The International Medical Committee of Lourdes studied her case over several years. On November 18, 2016, the committee concluded that her healing was unexpected, complete, lasting, and unexplained according to current medical knowledge. The final decision belonged to the Church. On February 11, 2018, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of the Sick, Bishop Jacques Benoit-Gonnin of Beauvais officially recognized Sister Bernadette's healing as miraculous. It became the 70th Lourdes healing officially recognized as a miracle by the Catholic Church. The announcement came nearly ten years after her pilgrimage. Her case illustrates how carefully the Church examines reported miraculous healings. Medical experts investigate the diagnosis and recovery, while the final declaration of a miracle is made by the competent Church authority. Sister Bernadette's story remains one of the most remarkable testimonies associated with Lourdes. For decades, she had lived with a debilitating spinal condition. After her pilgrimage, she experienced a sudden and lasting recovery that medical investigators could not explain. She had gone to Lourdes as a pilgrim among the sick. She returned home with a completely changed life. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for the sick, comfort those who suffer, and strengthen all who place their hope in God. Credit Fear Not
