October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and I want to name something too often overlooked Post-separation abuse. Because leaving doesn’t always end the abuse. 💔 When an abusive partner begins losing access to you and control over your choices, the tactics can change. Children, money, and shared responsibilities can become ways to keep exerting power. That can look like • Threatening to take the kids when you don’t give in, or questioning them about your private life. • Withholding support he can afford, or saying, “I’ll pay if you…” • Filing repeated, baseless court claims that drain your time and money. • Telling people you’re unstable while leaving out his threats and sharing your upset response as “proof.” And one of the hardest parts can be how out of character it feels from the person you thought you knew.🤷‍♀️ You may find yourself thinking, “How is this the same man I loved? Did I ever really know him? Am I making too much of this?” Meanwhile, other people still see Mr. Nice Guy. He’s helpful, charming, calm. They may struggle to believe your experience because it doesn’t match theirs. That gap can leave you feeling “crazy” and now you are questioning your judgment, replaying conversations, and searching for words that will finally make someone understand! You don’t have to make sense of every contradiction before taking the harm seriously. His ability to be kind to others does not erase how he treats you. You can remember loving parts of the relationship and still recognize that what is happening now is harmful. Look at the pattern over time. Notice the threats, pressure, or retaliation that keep interfering with your ability to make your own choices.☑️ Being separated doesn’t mean you should already feel safe, settled, or “over it.” You may be trying to heal while still dealing with ongoing harm. 🙏🏻Post-separation abuse needs to be named, understood, and taken seriously.
