I mean... your position sounds extremely progressive. I think you maybe meant these mayors were being *performative* about progressive language, rather than making progressive policy decisions?

I think a lot of the public has turned on the homeless because of these policies. People have valid concerns but they were met with gaslighting and accusations of not being empathetic from homeless advocates. The policies never had a chance because the treatment and housing part of it was never available.

Agree. But we need to stop prioritizing flashy development projects over mental health services, addiction treatment, housing stability, and case management. The “we can walk and chew gum” argument has become an excuse to avoid the harder work. As a community, we need to devote as much energy, advocacy, and investment to addressing poverty and homelessness as we do to promoting development. This isn’t just a City Hall problem. It’s a business and community investment problem, too. Growth is good, but stability must come first. It’s easy to build beautiful places. It’s much harder to heal people. We can’t keep investing in how Kansas City looks while neglecting how our community is actually doing.

I was one of the peopke who couldn't figure out why it was so hard to solve homelessness. I appreciate the way you explain the nuance and complications that exist.

Stereotype: American homelessness is caused by capitalism. Reality: American homelessness has been encouraged by faulty progressive policies. SF spends ~$100k/person/YEAR on homelessness. NY $80k. Yet somehow homelessness is growing!

Criminalizing fentanyl use on the streets is very different from criminalizing all homelessness and the latter is what some in power want to do. The older homeless women I work with currently don’t find anything about homelessness comfortable. They lived normal productive lives until illness or disability or whatever started a slide they couldn’t recover from.

The homeless shelters in my city are full of able-bodied grown men who blame all of their problems on women yet take and take from the all-female staff.

Criminalization is not "treatment and a pathway to housing".

Keeping people one step above rock bottom for an extended period of time is not compassion its torture.

all the money put into these programs. Remember the salary of the LA homeless program manager. Think they want to solve the problem or create an industry

It’s not “we care about you”. People just want the homeless to stop being homeless. “Stop it or we’ll make you stop!” #TheMoralistsNovel
