I have a scanner in my classroom. Students do everything on paper and then scan and submit to assignments in Google classroom. I grade on my iPad. I have not “lost” an assignment in 7 years. Submissions are time-stamped.

i would have loved your class! i love paper assignments! my brain would have perceived it as real and would've done them! (unlike online which is not perceived as real as i cannot touch it)

i hate this. My handwriting is atrocious. I’ve always much preferred to type something. While the lack of literacy may correlate strongly with increased technology usage it does not causate. Or perhaps, i’m just an outlier. 🤷♂️

As a HS senior, I love paper assignments. I like doing essays on google docs because it's easier, but all other assignments, I like doing it on paper because it hurts my eyes staring at a computer all day.

I HAAAAAATE chromebooks as a TA. They think banning phones in my state is gonna fix the issue of them being distracted when they’ll just go on their chromebooks instead. They don’t care.

genuinely curious. I have severe dyslexia and couldn't read the alphabet until I was about eight years old, even with constant practice and help from my mother. I find it easier to do things on computer. if a student of yours had a similar issue, what would you solution be to help?

After Covid, almost every class was mostly computers. My eyesight went from roughly a -2.75 on each side to now that I’m grown I have -4 on each side (prescriptions go up by 0.25 increments). I got told my junior year if my eyesight kept decreasing the way it was that I’d be lucky to have my eyesight by the time I was 40. Luckily now that I’ve been out of school for a few years my eyesight has been way steadier than it was. Sometimes I still get a little scared that I won’t have my eyesight later in life, but from what I can tell right now it’s just a small fear from what I was told when I was younger and not something I should be legitimately worried about. You’re doing your part to make sure these kids are taught and you’re doing so while choosing the path that’s the least straining for their eyes.

I’m not understanding the people who keep saying “well they need to learn how to type and use tech” ….there are computer labs for that ???? An English class should not have to rely on tech. A math class should not have to rely on tech. It’s called using your brain and motor function skills to write and process the information you’re learning. We did perfectly fine, if not better, without the laptops being our go-to form of learning every second of every day. Look up from the screen and experience SCHOOL. I promise it’s worth it.

We do all prep on paper and then final draft is typed on Chromebook - or voice to text. It’s the best of both worlds!

Aside from IReady time (30 mins). All tech is BANNED from my ELA classroom. And no one acknowledges the ironic hypocrisy of IReady… teaching children literacy skills through a screen… NGL this is levels of kafkaesque absurdity that I never expected to see.
