Why haven't we weaned the calves yet? Let me explain, because there's a little more to it than just separating babies from their mama! 1. Sonny and Rosie are only 3 months old! In regular pasture conditions, calves often nurse for 6–10 months, sometimes longer! Three months is still pretty young. 2. Daisy's health comes first. ALWAYS. Daisy and I have been battling mastitis since the END OF JUNE, and she has had one of her teats amputated. Abruptly stopping milk removal without a proper plan could cause milk buildup, udder pressure, and potentially contribute to mastitis in her remaining functional quarters. Given her history, I want to be especially careful about how we dry her off. 3. My goal is healthy, happy babies AND a healthy, happy mama going into winter. I'm thinking November may be our cutoff for weaning. That gives us time to work through the process carefully, monitor Daisy's udder, and make sure everyone is doing well. Then, hopefully, by December or January, when North Dakota decides to remind us why noone lives here (for real pur population of the entire state is 800,000), they can be reunited and spend the coldest part of winter together. I'm not interested in rushing a process just to say it's done. I want to do what's best for ALL of them, and with Daisy's history, that means being thoughtful about every step. AND I AM NOT getting her in a chute daily like this when its -50!! 😆
