One of the hardest lessons you’ll ever learn in life is that you can’t make everybody happy without eventually disappointing yourself. We spend so much time trying to be there for everyone. Saying yes when we really want to say no. Taking on other people’s problems. Putting our own goals, happiness, and peace on hold because we don’t want to let somebody down. And before you know it, you’ve given so much of yourself away that there’s barely anything left for you. That’s something I’ve had to learn myself. @tarajiphenson talks about the importance of saying no, and the older I get, the more I understand just how powerful that one word can be. Because not everybody deserves access to your time. Not every opportunity deserves your attention. And not every relationship is worth sacrificing your peace to maintain. Sometimes saying no means disappointing people who have gotten comfortable with you always saying yes. And that’s okay. You can have a good heart and still have boundaries. You can love people and still choose yourself. You can be generous without allowing people to take advantage of your kindness. Life is too short to spend it constantly trying to meet everyone else's expectations while neglecting your own. Protect your time. Protect your energy. Protect the people and things that truly matter to you. Because at the end of the day, choosing yourself doesn't mean you stopped caring about others.
