@animations30o: For centuries, the enormous stone heads of Easter Island have stared silently across the landscape, their expressionless faces watching over an isolated island in the Pacific. But what appears above ground is only part of them. Many of the famous moai are actually enormous full-bodied statues, with torsos extending beneath the soil. Over centuries, erosion and sediment accumulated around some of them, making them appear like giant disembodied heads emerging from the earth. Some moai stand several meters tall and weigh many tons, carved centuries ago by the Rapa Nui people and transported across the island without modern machinery. Even more fascinating, archaeologists have found carvings preserved on portions that became buried. They aren’t mysterious heads waiting beneath the island, as they’re sometimes portrayed online. They’re monuments left by an extraordinary civilization. And for some of them, the part staring back at you is only a fraction of what’s beneath your feet. 🗿
