@neuromanticfanatic: Over one-third of American adults will take an antidepressant at some point in their lives. This despite the fact that the chemical imbalance theory of depression has been totally repudiated: Umbrella review published in Molecular Psychiatry in 2023. Low serotonin, used to justify SSRI prescription on a massive scale, does not cause depression. Simple as. #MentalHealth #neuroscience #depression #SSRI #medicaltiktok
SSRIs destroyed my life completely and permanently
I developed a condition called PSSD which is hell on earth.. life destroying suffering in a way I can't describe. my life is totally over.

sometimes i can't help but to think it's the system causing it and the only way to cure depression in the long term is to change the system we're living in. and i know this is such a broad statement but it's true. they would have to recognize all of the ways in which the system (social, political, heirachrical, economical etc) has failed us all. there's so much that we cannot change and on order for us to address that we would need to restructure our world order. that's definitely not going to happen in one generation, although we are making some progress. my point being that this batch of generations is going through the trenches of modern society and depression is just a side effect of it. we need to make this place better so that future generations don't experience the same type of mental suffering that has taken the lives of many.

ssris are best selling becaause they work. theyre some of the modt efficacious drugs in psychiatry and theyve only gotten better with targeted SMS drugs and adjuncts. individually ssris might not be efficacious but the class as a whole certainly is

On one hand, certainly pharma has pushed and overwrought hypothesis with SSRIs, but I also think you are downplaying the way that these drugs do help a lot of people and the studies that actually give reasonable models for this effect. Evidence does show that while a lack of serotonin may not be the underlying issue, that a lack of hippocampal neurogenesis is implicated in depression, and through an albeit indirect chain of events, SSRIs do appear to increase neurogenesis via BDNF. The long time for them to take effect appears to be because the increase in tonic serotonin leads to the downregulation of 5-HT1A autoreceptors, increasing the phasic effects of serotonin neurons. This has shown to be a generally procognitive effect.

All I know is my meds work and I don't cry everyday anymore. (I don't know if I'm on SSRI or something else though. I just know it has helped. 🤷♀️)

thank you so much for making this video. it makes a lot of sense. doctors have been throwing SSRI’s at me since i was ten and it’s been fucking torturous for me. this makes me wonder how much of the “depression” i so call has is environmental rather than mental. or how much could have been the ssri in the first place (being weened off and put back on). again, thank you so much.

SSRIs don’t work on me, but I know a lot of people they do wonders for. I just wish my mental health professionals would’ve sought beyond them

This is so interesting and also made me want to give you a high-five at the end. I will go look up this study. I’m not on SSRIs but I’m on plenty of APs and I’ve always been curious about their efficacy.

If you have a headache, it’s not from a lack of ibuprofen in your system. The headache is a sign of something else that needs addressed but we don’t address it and merely throw ibuprofen at the sign. Same with SSRIs.
