@browneyedgurl801: By the time his daughter's homecoming arrived, simply walking across a football field had become a serious challenge for Brett Yancey. The 47-year-old Alabama father had been battling esophageal cancer for years. His health had deteriorated significantly. He needed supplemental oxygen, struggled to walk even short distances and had recently experienced problems with his left leg. But his youngest daughter, 17-year-old Sarakate, had been selected for the homecoming court at Southside High School. And Brett wanted to escort her. His wife, Carrie, worried about the roughly 50-yard walk across the football field and suggested that he use a golf cart instead. Brett refused. He told her he was going to walk his daughter across that field. On September 29, 2023, he did exactly that. Carrying his oxygen with him, Brett slowly made his way across the field beside Sarakate. Then came another moment the family had been hoping for. Sarakate was crowned homecoming queen. Carrie later recalled the emotion in the stadium as her husband stood beside their youngest daughter for the celebration. Brett continued fighting cancer after that night, and his family and community rallied around him. He had spent years as a teacher and coach, including coaching his own daughters in sports. Just over a year after that unforgettable walk, Brett died on October 2, 2024, at the age of 48. His obituary remembered a man who lived for the moments that mattered most with his family. 🩷
