I definitely think it’s because not dated/ worn out clothing is hard to find secondhand that isn’t a million dollars. If I’m buying a shirt don’t care about the og price and it’s been worn. Don’t charge me more than $20. Nobody wants to search through racks of clothes where half of it is really worn and the other half is really expensive. I definitely think if our op shops were smaller and items were better displayed that people would also go there more

I have tried to find nice clothes at shops and op shops but Australia does not cater to bigger ladies. I don’t want to dress like a 76yr old boomer lady I am young I want cute clothes that are affordable. The plus size clothing industry in Australia is shit and expensive. I don’t want to buy from fast fashion because of the ethics but sometimes there’s literally nothing else I can do. I am not accepting nor entertaining any “just lose weight then” comments because I don’t need to explain my health issues that make it hard to keep weight off. I do agree with OP though, if you are skinnier you can most definitely find some really nice stuff from op shops

collectivel Australians agree that the US wages are incredibly low and they wouldn't work for $7 an hour. K think about how much people get paid to make fast fashion. the double standard is wild to me. Come on Australia we can now ditch the fast fashion

i do think that it's a) how long it takes to get GOOD and somewhat affordable clothes down here b) just how expensive and popularised op shops and second hand stores are and c) the insanity of sizing currently. australian brands are either totally out of the average person's price range OR are like sizes 2-14. its pretty dire all around.

I get into so many arguments with people (gen z women) on TikTok about fast fashion, the myth of “ethical” dupes from brands like glasses etc, and they genuinely refuse to see an issue with their consumption habits. insanely depressing

oh my lord, I use to have the same pair of boots, I only got rid of them because the insole got worn through from how much I wore them and started cutting a hole in my foot when I wore them 🥲 I realised years later that I could've replaced the insole 😭
