City Club by The Growlers (2016) A favorite of mine by these guys! There’s something intoxicating about “City Club”. It’s an album that captures the beauty of being lost, blending sleazy charm, hazy nostalgia, and an irresistible sense of late-night freedom. With “City Club”, The Growlers took their signature California weirdness and transformed it into something darker, sleeker, and more metropolitan. The surf-rock haze was still there, but sharper grooves and polished production gave the band a fresh identity. The title track sets the mood perfectly, while “I’ll Be Around” and “Vacant Lot” balance emotional vulnerability with a haunting sense of emptiness. “Night Ride” feels made for aimless drives beneath streetlights, while “Dope on a Rope” delivers some of the album’s most infectious energy, turning trouble into something irresistibly cool. “When You Were Made” brings a softer, romantic touch, while “Rubber & Bone,” “The Daisy Chain,” and “Too Many Times” deepen the record’s themes of desire, repetition, and the beautiful mess of human relationships. Julian Casablancas’ involvement and the album’s release through Cult Records played an important role in this sonic evolution. His influence helped bring a tighter, more polished edge to The Growlers’ sound without completely sacrificing their eccentric personality. The result feels like a meeting point between California garage-rock grit and the darker, stylish energy of New York nightlife. Rather than simply recreating their earlier sound, the band embraced a new direction that made “City Club” feel both familiar and refreshingly different. What makes this album special is its atmosphere. It’s seductive but slightly unsettling, romantic yet cynical, polished but never entirely clean. Every song feels like another scene in the same strange, neon-lit movie, where loneliness and excitement coexist and the night always seems to last a little longer than expected. Ultimately, “City Club” is the soundtrack to questionable decisions, fleeting connections, and nights you wish you could relive even knowing exactly how they end. The Growlers created something that feels less like an album and more like a place—a beautifully crooked world you can disappear into whenever reality becomes a little too ordinary. #thegrowlers #thegrowlerscityclub #vinyl #music #fyp
