A question for Catholics and this may be an ignorant question but it’s a legit one and I’m a follower of Christ trying to understand Catholicism better. If it is a church established by Christ and early church fathers then why are we still adding doctrine to the church? If we only listen to the pope wouldn’t that simply following one man’s interpretation?

The question of “why did Christianity function without a finalized Bible for centuries?” is one that needs more nuance than what you’re giving it. Though you are correct that a canon was eventually “agreed” upon and established centuries after the church began, even before the canon was “established” the early church circulated the writings of the NT and the books we have today were essentially agreed upon universally as scripture. It was only until 325 AD, the council of Nicaea that the church formally declared what was deemed as scripture, even though these books were again, already widely regarded as scripture in the 1st century.

as a confessional lutheran, couple things here, i think you’re confusing solo sciptura and sola scriptura. difference being sola scriptura referencing how we believe scripture is the only inherently infallible piece while still u details

1. The church was not fixed 1500 years later… The early church just wasn’t Catholic. The ideas of the modern Catholic Church are much different than what was originally taught by Jesus. 2. I agree but the same goes for the reverse. Are you actually feeling the Holy Spirit or are you just in a different setting than your normal life which causes a different feeling and you think that feeling is the Holy Spirit? 3. The word of God is enough and those things taught were then written down. And centuries is not correct. These writings came very early and were eventually compiled and saw as canon way before the Catholic said it was canon. 4. Jesus was claiming to be Christ publicly for the first time and that is why so many left. The Jews do not believe Jesus is Christ. Jesus doubled down multiple times using His metaphor. Doubling down while using a metaphor does not make it literal.

I could ask the same thing. Do catholics feel the Holy Spirit or is it just the quiet and rituals that get mistaken for the Holy Spirit? Can you explain how you feel the Holy Spirit without saying only your religion has the Holy Spirit because our church and magisterium says so?

1) Why did God have the Israelites/Jews live under the Old Covenant for 1,400 years if the New Covenant would come? Mind you, the early church the apostles established is very far from the Roman Catholic Church today. 2) I feel the Holy Spirit in worship & prayer outside of church. It’s not a concert experience of dopamine. 3) No one is arguing scripture is all you need with no church. Sola scriptura means scripture is the final authority, not the only authority. 4) I’m not even sure what you’re trying to ask.

per each slide my gut take 1. I mean humans being sinful and corrupted needing repentance is a very common pattern. and not like the entire church is tossed or disregarded. same test if fruit from scripture does show a lot of problems going on over time that it's fair to question the faithfulness of the papacy. 2. tis fair point 3. eh I mean the word was still being shared. fact it's more organized and tested doesn't really change anything plus there is a massive difference in solo vs Sola scriptura and how it's applied. doesn't mean everything else is irrelevant 4. respectfully that's not a good argument. he did this all the time throughout his ministry. the bigger issue you'll see is not that communion is important and powerful, but to absolutely state it is transubstantiation vs consubstantiation vs a powerful spiritual moment which is where Catholics draws a raised eyebrow because it's defined so explicitly and without wiggle. which you can't get to that without just trusting later teachings. this isn't a Eucharist discussion anymore it's authority as a whole and circles back to point three really

I think the ultimate question comes down to the authority the Catholic bishops had at the councils where the scriptures were officially canonized. Everyone who deems scripture as the infallible word of God simultaneously submits to the authority of the Catholic Church, and that’s fascinating.

#4 totally defeats Sola Scriptura. the canon of the Bible was established by the Catholic Church centuries after our Lord established the Church, and Martin Luther, one man, decided to remove books & chapters and reconstruct it

Very 1st point-1500 years later…so, Luther. Okay, fine. So what about the other six schisms before that? Can’t seem to hold it together at all really.
