Although I don’t disagree, this starts at home. No tablets! No phones! Blocks, cars, dress dolls, play doh, color, paint…….

Pedi OT here! My son is in Pre-K 4, and we received a message from his school saying that all the children in his class were behind in fine motor skills. One of that week’s activities involved cutting out small rectangles along dotted lines in order to match them to spaces in a picture. I was baffled and kindly explained that cutting out shapes of that size and with that kind of precision and accuracy is most definitely not age appropriate. Why are we presenting activities like this when they should be learning through play!

As an OT I agree, what is expected in Kindergarten isn’t even appropriate for kids that age, it bothers me as an OT so much!

As a preschool teacher, I make sure we play with so much play doh, string beads, using tweezers, eye droppers etc!

Make kids get into tumbling/gymnastics again! It’s essential to know your center of gravity, how it reacts to movement and sports etc 🤷🏼‍♀️

Not controversial. Play is crucial for development and kids often don’t attend any community type environment until entering kindergarten. If they don’t know how to play and develop certain social skills as well this can significantly stunt them social emotionally

Ugh I have literally talked to my principal about this so many times. Not that she has much say on it, but this is my soap box I stand tall on often! They aren’t developmentally ready to be writing 26 letters and even sentences.

Agreed! As a mom and an OT, I truly feel like we’ve lost the art of letting kids play, practice life skills, and learn through everyday experiences while we guide and support their learning. Sometimes, the simplest moments offer the best learning opportunities!

We are fully outdoors so we use many different mediums to try and write. We are trying to create genius in our kindergarten now instead of being children.

Agree 100%! I’m a school based OT and standards are not developmentally appropriate. They also do wayyyyyy too much on computers, rather than pencil and paper.

I agree as a Pre-k teacher in a public school. Not only the lack of fine motor skills but also a lack of social and emotional regulation. Kids need to learn how to regulate their emotions and get along with others. We are also seeing more kids coming to school who are not potty trained!!!!
