Tokyos metro is rather small too for the size of the Metropolitan Area, the japanese model of running suburban railways into subways are a great model imo, japan generally just builds commuter infrastructure first, and the metros are basically another form of it

So many other private trains in Kyoto and Osaka, kind of hard to see what’s public and what’s private when you’re there 😂 I just use Google Maps and it tells me all the options with price and timing built in

Well yeah, Kyoto isn't that big of the city. It’s in the same Metropolitan area (Keihanshin) as Osaka... you can get there using the lines that connect to Osaka and Nara 😂

I liked the Kyoto subway but since it was less extensive, I definitely relied on buses more often than I expected.

It's pretty decent. I've tended to end up relying on the Keihan and Hankyu Lines more on recent visits, but the outer sections of the Tozai Line can feel like your own personal metro!

you can kind of tell kyoto was designed by the government because the tozai line goes right to the city office. kyoto is also very red in politics
