@roaminrachel3: Gardner's Old Burying Ground is a treasure trove of local history, officially established in 1785. Interestingly, the oldest gravestone here dates back to 1780, belonging to an infant named Ebenezer Eaton—predating the cemetery's official founding! This historic plot is the final resting place for 26 of the original signers who petitioned for Gardner's incorporation in 1785. It also honors local minutemen and patriots from the Revolutionary War, connecting us directly to the birth of the nation. Key historical features: • The 1847 Town Public Tomb: A heavy granite structure built to hold bodies during harsh New England winters when digging was impossible. • Masterpieces in Slate: Unlike many historic cemeteries, this one features beautifully preserved dark slate headstones. Their crisp geometric borders, weeping willows, urns, and deep epitaphs carved by 18th-century stonecutters remain remarkably clear. The cemetery actively served for nearly two centuries, with its last interment in 1974, preserving much of the town's frontier and early industrial past. #cemetery #OldBuryingGround #RevolutionaryWar #NewEnglandHistory #cemeteryexploring
