Robert Gasser's father was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers. He never signed, and a couple of years later his elbow went, and he never threw one inning as a professional. Tonight his son starts game 3 of the National League Championship Series for the Milwaukee Brewers. Here is the whole thing. His father is Jim Gasser. The Brewers took him in the 27th round. He turned it down, and two years later the San Francisco Giants took him in the 8th. Then the elbow. Here is how Jim puts it.
"That was the end of me." The telegram the Brewers sent stayed in the family house. Robert grew up looking at it. Nobody wanted the son either. One outlet left him off its draft board entirely. The San Diego Padres took him 71st, and four years ago San Diego traded Josh Hader to Milwaukee and he was one of the smaller pieces. So 38 years after that telegram, the Brewers finally got a Gasser. Two years ago he made his debut against the St. Louis Cardinals. Six innings, no runs. Both his parents were there. His first five starts: 2 and 0, a 2.57 earned run average, 28 innings, and one walk. One. Now the part that hurts. He had already been on the injured list that spring with a bone spur pressing on the ligament. He pitched the best month of his life on an arm that was already going. In June he had Tommy John surgery. "I was having the time of my life. It was the best month of my life, pitching good in the Major Leagues with a winning team." "Dealing with that was tough." 25 months passed before he won another game. The Los Angeles Dodgers swept this same series last year and Gasser pitched in it. Tonight he goes to Dodger Stadium with his team up two games to none. The Brewers have been to one World Series. It was 44 years ago. There is a telegram with Jim Gasser's name on it. His son is two wins from taking the family back. #MLB #majorleaguebaseball #baseball #brewers #milwaukeebrewers
