@0surreal0: Claude Mellan (1598–1688) was a French engraver known for his incredible skill. Instead of using cross-hatching, he created light, shadow, and depth by changing the thickness of parallel lines. His most famous work is The Sudarium of Saint Veronica (1649), which shows the face of Christ using just one continuous spiral line. The line starts at the tip of Christ’s nose and spirals outward. What makes this engraving so extraordinary is that the line never crosses itself. Mellan created every detail , from Christ’s facial features and Crown of Thorns to the light and shadows ,simply by making the same line thicker or thinner. #art #painting #christ #french #spiral
