@sfchronicle: Tony Lee’s family history is written into the walls of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Inside the stately Grant Avenue building that houses the Lee Family Association, portraits of his father and grandfather hang alongside those of generations of members who helped their fellow Chinese immigrants settle in the city. But today, none of Lee’s grandfather’s descendants still live in Chinatown — and few remain in the city at all. Instead, they are part of a seismic shift as Chinese American households in San Francisco move away from historically Chinese neighborhoods. Read more via the link in our bio. They relocated to the dangerous neighborhoods, took advantage of the lower priced/ foreclosed properties in those neglected parts of the city where the people were disadvantaged and struggling with the effects of systemic and societal racism, prejudice, and discrimination. They moved from places that were higher priced due to being pushed out and in pursuit of stability, and more bang for their buck, a better life. They relocated into impoverished areas and experienced life as it is for those who have grown up in that hostile environment. And they forced those people out of their neighborhoods by taking advantage of their disadvantaged positions and called the same violence the community has experienced for too“hate crimes” But oddly it doesn’t seem to be considered a hate crime or a problem if it’s happening within a single ethnic group?! Ultimately the overtaking of communities when it’s racially driven, will always be exactly what it is-racist. This is a question for everyone everywhere- if racism is illegal, why does race continue to be used to separate or stereotypically categorize one human from another?
