He Thought the Bears Loved Him… Until This Happened 😳 For 13 summers, Timothy Treadwell traveled to Alaska’s Katmai region where he spent extended periods observing and filming wild brown bears at extremely close range. His footage and advocacy eventually made him well known and he founded the organization Grizzly People. In the fall of 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were camping near Kaflia Bay in Katmai National Park and Preserve. They remained in the area unusually late in the season and their campsite was in an area heavily traveled by bears. A later National Park Service investigation noted poor visibility from tall vegetation and numerous bear trails around the site. On October 5, 2003, Treadwell encountered a bear near camp. Investigators later concluded the fatal attack occurred during daylight at roughly 2 p.m. during heavy rain. Huguenard came from the tent to try to help him. She was subsequently attacked and killed as well. A video camera at the campsite was running during part of the attack. It did not capture video of what happened, only audio. Contemporary reporting says investigators heard Treadwell and Huguenard attempting to respond to the attack on the recording. The recording has never been officially released to the public. The following day, October 6, the pilot scheduled to pick them up arrived at the campsite and saw a bear near what appeared to be human remains. He alerted the National Park Service and Alaska State Troopers. Responding authorities recovered the remains of Treadwell and Huguenard and killed two bears during the response; the official medical examination listed Treadwell’s cause of death as bear mauling. Treadwell’s story later became widely known through Werner Herzog’s 2005 documentary Grizzly Man, which incorporated footage Treadwell had filmed during his years in Alaska.
