"The Pines" is a solo-made horror RPG where upsetting the wrong person at a therapy retreat means they hunt you through the woods. Edward Walker is a former detective who burned out after a case went cold. His therapist suggests a secluded retreat: quiet surroundings, professionals on site, time to put himself back together. The place is exactly as calming as advertised until you start paying attention, at which point a conspiracy begins assembling itself around you. The mechanic that makes it is the Stalker System. Say the wrong thing to someone, cross them, or dig somewhere you were not invited, and a resident who seemed perfectly harmless can come back as a stalker who follows you through the forests for the rest of the game. Your social mistakes become a permanent hostile presence in the world. Around that sits open-world exploration, investigation, and combat that is deliberately awkward: guns and ammunition are scarce, so most of what you do is melee with bats and axes. Coverage keeps reaching for Alan Wake as the comparison, which is about right for the paranoia. Built by one developer, Kevin Jochems of Studio Abattoir in the Netherlands, now signed to Silver Lining Interactive.
