In many villages across India, you will often notice a fierce guardian deity standing at the entrance of a temple, while the main presiding deity within the shrine remains serene and meditative. Many people mistakenly assume that this guardian is the principal deity. A well-known example is Aiyaṉār (ஐயனார்) in villages. Aiyaṉār himself is traditionally depicted in a calm and composed form, whereas the fierce guardian stationed at the boundary or entrance is known in Tamil as Muṉṉāṭiyāṉ (முன்னாடியான் ), literally meaning “the one who stands in front” or “the one who goes ahead.” These Muṉṉāṭiyāṉs are the folk manifestation of Kṣetrapāla, the guardian aspect of Bhairava, whose role is to protect the sacred boundary and the presiding deity. A good example can be seen in the Tulu tradition surrounding Pañjurli. The fierce guardian associated with Pañjurli is Guliga. In the film Kantara, formidable figure who appears in the climactic scenes is Guliga. The protagonist unintentionally offers blood to Guliga after striking his head, symbolising a traditional form of blood offering directed towards the guardian rather than the principal deity.
