ADHD Lesson #326 When Your Mouth Starts Speaking Before Your Brain Has Finished Organizing the Words Have you ever been in the middle of a conversation and completely rearranged the words coming out of your mouth? Maybe you meant to say “jelly beans” and said “belly jeans,” or you were trying to say “a blushing bride” and somehow said “a brushing blide.” Sometimes you don’t even realize what you’ve said until everyone starts laughing. These kinds of speech errors are called spoonerisms, which happen when sounds from different words get switched around. They’re not exclusive to ADHD, and everyone experiences occasional speech mix-ups. However, some people with ADHD report noticing them more often when they’re excited, distracted, tired, or trying to communicate several thoughts at once. ADHD can affect attention, working memory, and impulse control, which all play a role in organizing our thoughts and communication. That doesn’t mean spoonerisms are a recognized ADHD symptom or that every verbal mix-up has something to do with neurodivergence. It’s simply an interesting experience worth talking about, especially because so many people assume they’re the only ones doing it. And I love that not everything we discuss about ADHD has to be a struggle. Sometimes understanding how our minds work gives us something to laugh about together. What’s the funniest thing you’ve accidentally said when your brain and mouth weren’t cooperating? #ADHD #Neurodivergent #Wellness
