5 OFFSHORE JOB MYTHS I BELIEVED BEFORE APPLYING — AND NUMBER 5 ALMOST MADE ME GIVE UP! 😳🌊 Here is what I wish someone had told me before I started looking into offshore work. There’s a lot people get wrong about life on an oil rig, so let’s separate the myths from reality. MYTH NUMBER 1: “OFFSHORE WORKERS JUST SIT AROUND.” Reality? A typical shift can last 12 hours. Depending on your role, you could be handling cargo, assisting with maintenance, performing safety checks, or supporting daily operations. It’s not a holiday — the work can be physically and mentally demanding. MYTH NUMBER 2: “YOU’LL BE STUCK AT SEA FOR MONTHS.” Not necessarily! Many offshore jobs operate on planned rotations, such as two weeks on and two weeks off. But schedules vary by employer, country, and position, so always check the actual roster. MYTH NUMBER 3: “YOU HAVE TO BE HUGE AND STRONG TO WORK OFFSHORE.” That’s not true for every role. Some jobs involve heavy physical work, while others focus on catering, housekeeping, administration, logistics, and technical skills. You still need to meet the job’s fitness and medical requirements. MYTH NUMBER 4: “IT’S DANGER EVERY SECOND.” Offshore work has real risks, but that’s why safety procedures, training, permits, and emergency drills are so important. Workers are expected to identify hazards and follow strict rules — not take unnecessary risks. MYTH NUMBER 5: “EVERYONE GETS RICH WORKING OFFSHORE.” This is the big one! Some offshore professionals earn excellent money, but salaries depend on the role, experience, location, and employer. Entry-level workers shouldn’t expect every job to pay six figures. And remember, you may spend weeks away from home, so the lifestyle isn’t for everyone. Now tell me: which myth did you believe — 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5? Drop the number in the comments! Follow this page, comment “OFFSHORE,” and check the link in my bio for our step-by-step guide to getting started with your offshore career.
