Old-school brake cleaner was some seriously aggressive stuff. Depending on the product and era, brake cleaners used powerful solvents—including chlorinated formulas—that were extremely effective at stripping grease, oil, and brake dust. Unfortunately, breathing those vapours could also cause dizziness, headaches, and that “high” feeling that definitely meant you were being exposed to something you shouldn’t be inhaling. That feeling isn’t a harmless buzz. Brake-cleaner vapours can affect your nervous system, irritate your lungs, and become dangerous at high concentrations. Some chlorinated brake cleaners can also produce extremely toxic gases if exposed to high heat, flames, or certain welding processes, which is why ventilation and using the product properly matters. Every older mechanic seems to have a story about using ridiculous amounts of brake clean in a barely ventilated shop and realizing afterward that the room was starting to feel a little different. The lesson isn’t that the old stuff “worked better”—it’s that if your brake cleaner is making you feel high, it’s probably time to get some fresh air.
