I recognize that there are politics at play with the Ilhan Omar situation. Donald Trump has said that he is suspicious of Ms. Omar and her family history, but a judge must have seen something compelling enough for them to grant a search warrant that was recently executed at her personal residence. I have to admit, initially I just thought this was just political shenanigans. When I listened to NPR, they framed it this way. This is just a complete political witch hunt. After some research, I realized that there are legitimate serious questions around the conditions under which Ms. Omar naturalized and became a US citizen. First of all, there's clear evidence that she misrepresented who her dad was and what he did in Somalia. She calls him a teacher, but even America-based publications whose audience is the Somali community called him a prominent Somali military officer. Now, the problematic thing is that he was a prominent Somali military officer in the military of the Somali dictator Said Barre, who committed guilty of crimes against humanity, was ultimately defeated, and left Somalia in chaos. That chaos is what Ilhan Omar's father fled when he had to flee Somalia. Another important element is that Somalians don't name themselves like we do. When we were naturalizing these Somali refugees, the naming situation and establishing family relationships was extremely difficult. According to my research, the Department of State had to halt the refugee program because they found that somewhere around 87% of the refugees who were naturalizing were using fake names and false family associations. According to research done by multiple investigative journalists, what actually happened is Ilhan's family split up because there was one family in the US who agreed to allow Ilhan's father and two of his daughters to come into the United States claiming to be their family members. The other refugees went to the UK, one of those refugees being her brother. Also, Ilhan later put $3 million campaign dollars into this political consultant's company, and then she married him. So she marries the guy whose company she had just routed 3 million of her own campaign dollars to. Anyway, we're going to look at this story because it's actually kind of crazy. #news #politics #fraud #minnesota #trump
