The i in iPhone stands for internet. Back when the iMac came out its big thing was the internet hence the name iMac. This i carried over to the other products like the iPhone, iPad and iPod since they utilise the internet and that is their thing. Back then it was revolutionary to have a phone that could browse the entire net or a tablet that was between a phone and Laptop or a music player that small using the internet. Things like that were huge back then and are now seen as normal and expected which if you think about it is kinda sad.

iPhone meant Internet phone- it was the first “smartphone” that had a full html browser (safari) on it. I bought the first iPhone in store for $432, took it home and activated it using the included cable and my windows laptop. No one really even knew what it was or its capabilities back then.
