You guys are saying there’s nothing wrong with being gay (which is true) but let’s not pretend that a lot of families/communities (including muslim ones like mine) are not tolerant of homosexuals and there is HUGE stigma around coming out. Yes, people should not enter marriages that do not align with their sexuality but don’t act like the family and community don’t have a responsibility as to why people feel the need to hide who they are and do these things in an attempt to satisfy what is expected of them by those closest to them. If it truly was not an issue for them to be gay these things would not be happening but we all know that people are not as accepting as you seem to imply.

What people don’t realise - especially these three - is how difficult it is for gay men and women to come out in the South Asian community. It’s not that easy. The homophobia is subtle yet there in this conversation.

We’re incredibly fortunate to live in countries where we can be our authentic selves. And yet, even here, some gay people are still assaulted by their own parents for coming out, or forced into marriages with no real way out. It’s an absolutely awful situation for all parties involved. The only way things will truly change is if we root homophobia out of our own communities.

If you shame men for being gay, beat them, degrade them, shame any sign of """unmasculine""" behaviour in men, use religion to tell them they're going to hell/be eternally punished for their sins, use the reputation of the family to keep their mouths shut, you can't be shocked that men repress their sexuality. straight people cause this shame for gay people then act shocked when they feel like they cant come out.
