In a hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, a mother watched a machine stop working. It was the machine keeping her daughter alive. Michelle knew what that meant. So did the doctors. They tried the backup line. And it failed too. Her daughter, Blakeley Faith, was in danger. Her potassium had climbed to a level that can cause the heart to stop. Her sodium had dropped dangerously low. And just days earlier, Blakeley had been making such good progress. Blakeley has already beaten odds that doctors set at birth. Michelle says they once warned the family that Blakeley might live only minutes. She was born with an extraordinarily rare chromosome abnormality and serious kidney problems. Since then, Blakeley has been through more than 30 trips to the operating room. She has spent more than 1,000 days on dialysis. She has been in the hospital since August 17. That was after complications left her overloaded with fluid and her organs failing. Her parents, Michelle and Namon, were told she might not survive. But she kept fighting. Then came this week. Blakeley's new dialysis catheter filled her belly with fluid, but it would not drain. For nearly 24 hours, she went without dialysis. Her bloodwork grew more alarming by the hour. When doctors could not get her other line to work, she was rushed to surgery. It was her fourth surgery during this hospital stay. Thankfully, surgeons were able to repair both lines. But the road ahead is still uncertain. Blakeley needs at least another week of two types of dialysis at once. Problems with her feeding tube could mean a fifth procedure. And her family was called to a care conference to talk through what the future might hold. Michelle says she and Namon are not superhumans.
