But the real magic here is the water. Crystal River is fed by over 30 springs, the most famous being Three Sisters Springs. In winter (Nov–March), hundreds of manatees gather here to escape the cold Gulf waters, making it the only place in the U.S. where you can legally swim alongside them. Book with a licensed tour operator and remember the golden rule: look, don’t touch, give them plenty of space, avoid loud splashes, and never block their path. Best time to visit? Late winter for peak manatee season, or spring for crystal-clear water without the crowds.
