I understand the criticism, but I think it overlooks something crucial: Hülya did not marry Fikret for just one reason. She also married him to protect her family, and that deserves far more recognition. With Sahil having so much of the city in his pocket, simply giving Hülya money would not necessarily have made her, her mother or her sister safe. Can we honestly assume that your uncle Salih would not have found a way to get his hands on it? They could have ended up in an even worse position, with the money gone and no lasting protection. And then what? Hülya would still be left without the security or respect she needed. You know your uncle Salih. Is it really so difficult to imagine him trying to manipulate Fikret and use Hülya as a route to his wealth? That is the distinction being overlooked: financial help is not the same as protection from someone determined to exploit you. You do not have to agree with Hülya’s decision to recognise the pressures behind it. Reducing her marriage to money alone overlooks both the danger her family faced and her determination to protect them.
