@MatiRani:BTW. The K-pop and cinema were initiated as industries. Koreans looked into the relation invested versus earned and found it the most rentable business. Clever.

JIM LEE :
Because of American money, the only way for the US to contain communist influence in Asia was by propping up puppet regimes like Japan and South Korea—especially from the 1970s to the 1990s. Once China rose, Japan and South Korea lost their usefulness, and American money stopped flowing into them. That's why Japan and South Korea are both declining now.

# The United States' Role in the Korean War The U.S. was the single most important international actor in the war — it was the driving force behind the UN intervention, provided the vast majority of UN forces, and shaped both the conduct and conclusion of the conflict. ## Decision to Intervene (June 1950) When North Korea invaded on June 25, 1950, the U.S. moved within days to organize a collective response: - **Truman's decision** was shaped by the logic of containment — the fear, fresh from the Berlin Blockade and the "loss of China," that inaction would embolden Communist expansion everywhere. - **UN Security Council resolutions**: The USSR was boycotting the Council over China's seat, so it couldn't veto. The U.S. secured resolutions condemning the invasion (Res. 82), authorizing force (Res. 83), and creating a **UN Command under a U.S. commander** (Res. 84). About 90% of UN forces were American. ## Shifting War Aims: Containment vs. Rollback U.S. policy went through a dramatic evolution: 1. **Defending South Korea** (June–Sept 1950): Defensive perimeter around Pusan. 2. **Roll back the North** (Sept–Oct 1950): After MacArthur's stunning **Inchon landing**, UN forces crossed the 38th parallel to unify Korea. Washington approved this despite warnings. 3. **Back to containment** (Nov 1950 onward): China's massive intervention nearly destroyed UN forces. After a harrowing retreat, the U.S. settled on restoring the status quo ante — roughly the pre-war boundary. ## Command and Civil-Military Conflict - **Douglas MacArthur** commanded UN forces until Truman **fired him in April 1951** for publicly criticizing the administration and advocating expanding the war into China, possibly with nuclear weapons. This was a landmark assertion of civilian control over the military. - Successors **Ridgway, Van Fleet, and Taylor** fought the grinding static war of 1951–53. ## Military Contribution - **Ground forces**: Peaked around 326,000 Americans in Korea; roughly 1.78 million served overall. - **Air power**: The U.S. achieved total air superiority and waged an enormous strategic bombing campaign that devastated North Korean industry and cities — most North Korea
