“In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God.” What did the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John mean by Logos/λόγος and “in the beginning”? This video examines the Greek terms Λόγος and ἀρχή, the relationship between Genesis 1 and John 1, and the absolute distinction between the uncreated Creator and everything that came into being. The Holy Apostle and Evangelist John does not present Jesus Christ as “a god,” the first creature, an exalted spirit child, or a being who progressed into divinity. He proclaims that the Logos eternally was, was personally with God, was God by nature, created all things, and truly became flesh as our Lord Jesus Christ. He exists within an order He did not create and is presented as one exalted divine being within a plurality of gods. Human beings may likewise progress toward godhood. This is not the Holy Trinity, but a hierarchy of separate divine beings united by purpose rather than the one undivided divine essence. The apostolic faith permits neither the Watchtower’s created Christ nor Mormonism’s henotheistic plurality of gods. There is one God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father is unbegotten; the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; and the Holy Spirit eternally proceeds from the Father. They are three distinct divine Persons—not three separate beings or three gods—but the one consubstantial and undivided Holy Trinity, possessing one divine essence, will, power, glory, and activity.
