The Rustamid dynasty, an Ibadi Muslim state centered at Tahert (near modern Tiaret, Algeria), had ruled the region since the eighth century. After the Fatimid movement rose to power in Ifriqiya, its forces moved against the Rustamids, whose territory stood in the way of further Fatimid expansion. . . . In 909 CE, the Fatimid army, supported by Kutama Berber warriors, captured Tahert and defeated the Rustamid Imamate under its last ruler, Yaqzan ibn Muhammad. The conquest brought an end to the Rustamid state, and Tahert was subsequently devastated. Many surviving Ibadi inhabitants fled south toward the Sahara, with some communities later becoming associated with the M'zab region.
