@japdmedia26: OFF-DUTY NYPD DETECTIVE STABBED SEVEN TIMES AS TWO SUSPECTS ARE ARRESTED Norwood, Bronx, New York, United States — An off-duty New York City police detective was stabbed seven times during an alleged robbery attempt, and two suspects were later arrested in Massachusetts. Detective Jose Mercedes, 33, was reportedly near his car on October 2 when two men allegedly attacked him while attempting to steal his gold chain. According to witness accounts cited by news outlets, Mercedes fought back and chased the suspects before collapsing. He was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center and released several days later. Police identified the suspects as D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24. Authorities arrested them in Lynn, Massachusetts, on October 7, after a search involving New York and Massachusetts law enforcement agencies. According to the New York Daily News, Carabello told reporters outside the 52nd Precinct, “I did it to eat.” He also reportedly said in Spanish, “Mommy, I’m OK.” His alleged accomplice, Mejia, reportedly said, “I didn’t do anything.” The two men are accused of involvement in the attack and face serious criminal allegations. Both were arrested and were expected to face proceedings in New York. They are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The case has also drawn attention to immigration enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security said both suspects were from the Dominican Republic and had previously been in U.S. immigration custody. Federal officials criticized New York's sanctuary policies, arguing that greater cooperation with immigration authorities could have prevented the incident. However, those claims about whether different immigration policies would have prevented the attack remain arguments made by officials, rather than established facts. The investigation has raised questions about public safety, repeat arrests, immigration enforcement and the responsibilities of local and federal authorities. What do you think: Should local authorities cooperate more closely with federal immigration officials when suspects have previous records? #Bronx #NewYork #USA #JoseMercedes #JAPD
