@ayothevision: As a kid, I never understood why adults let their post pile up unopened. A few fines later, I get it. The dread when a brown envelope lands is real. But ignoring it is the most expensive option you have. Problems in envelopes don't disappear. They snowball. A £100 fine today can become £1,000 if you leave it. If you open it and find you owe money, contact them! If you can't pay right now, say so. Ask for a payment plan and pay it back in instalments. Be careful with offers to "write off" the debt. It can show up on your credit report as a default and stay there for 6 years. That's a heavy price for a £50 fine. Please bear in mind that one day you'll want to use your credit for a mortgage, a car or a business. Don't let a small fine you ignored get in the way.
