When my baby turned 6 months old, I chose to have him receive an early dose of the MMR vaccine. Here's why: The routine MMR vaccine schedule in the U.S. starts at 12 months because that's when babies develop the strongest, longest-lasting immune response. But in certain situations, babies 6-11 months old can receive an additional early dose if they're at higher risk of being exposed to measles. Around the country, we are currently seeing record numbers of measles cases. We live in NYC, an amazing place visited by so many people from so many places. For our family, after talking through the risks and benefits, that extra layer of protection made sense. I want to take the subway, visit fun spots, etc and not live in fear that someone somewhere could expose my baby. A few important things to know: ✨ This early dose does not replace the routine doses at 12-15 months and 4-6 years. It provides protection now, but my baby will still need the standard series later. ✨ Not every baby needs an early MMR vaccine. The decision depends on individual circumstances, including travel, local outbreaks, and your pediatrician's recommendations. ✨ Measles is one of the most contagious viruses we know. While most children recover, it can cause serious complications, especially in infants. This last fact weighed heavily on my decision. If you've been hearing more about early MMR vaccination and wondering who should consider it, I hope this information helps you, but it does not replace talking to your pediatrician. #Measles #MMR #VaccinesWork #Pediatrics #Parenting
