SATURDAY 10 OCTOBER DAY SIX — THE AFTERMATH THE FRAUD ENDED. THE ABUSE DIDN'T. Victim's experienced: loss of control shame trauma isolation continuing contact multiple reports repeating the story lack of understanding being treated as a transaction rather than a person rebuilding trust rebuilding autonomy VICTIM'S- LIVES-ENDED Cecilie, Mary and Vicky- Instagram LIVE AT 5 Mary Stotler and Vicky, sister of Jo Lazaris's discuss the aftermath and consequences of being a victim of this fraud where lack of understanding and training can have the worst of impacts. What happens when the relationship was the mechanism of the harm? THE FIVE LAYERS TOOLKIT For entrenched victims, asking only “How much money did you lose?” can completely miss the mechanism of harm. The Five Layers Toolkit helps stakeholders understand the relationship, the manipulation and how the victim feels — not simply the transaction. There is never a one glove fits all solution in attempt to help a victim of this kind of manipulation to understand what we can see from the outside. We need a multitude of tools in our box. Sometimes we first need to understand the victim a little before we know what best to try. Whether we show curiosity, lead a victim to explore evidence we have found together, ask them questions to provoke reflection if situations were reversed, try to help them recognise feelings that have been purposefully manufactured to control or exploit, the one things that works least is showing how clever you are by telling them point blank: it's a scam. Engaging first to show trust in them, and that no judgement is present is most important if we expect a victim to open up to us.
