@theloriconway: I am choosing happy—even when life gives you plenty of reasons not to. Before my mom passes, she gives me one final blessing. One final reminder to keep living, keep loving, keep trusting God… and to allow myself to be happy again. Sometimes grief makes us feel guilty for smiling. For laughing. For moving forward. Almost like choosing joy means we’re leaving the people we love behind. But I’m learning that it doesn’t. Choosing happy doesn’t erase the hurt. It doesn’t mean I miss them any less. And it certainly doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten. Sometimes choosing happy is one of the bravest ways we can honor the people who love us most. I was married to my best friend for 40 years. I was devastated when he passed away. I chose to be happy again when I married someone that I knew who had also lost his wife. I still grieve my first love. I am grieving and I am happy at the same time. The hardest part for me was feeling judged by people. Of course they didn’t understand because they hadn’t gone through it. When you do remarry some people think that the grief ends. But it doesn’t. Like you said, you can still grieve and be happy.
