⚙️ How does a two-stroke engine start itself? It can’t. Six cylinders, standing still. So what gets it turning? The answer is compressed air, in two systems: 💨 Starting air: typically around 30 bar, does the heavy work. 🎛️ Control air: around 7 bar, carries the signals that decide when and where the starting air is used. 🔒 Before any start: The turning gear is disengaged and the starting-air stop valve is opened. Air passes the non-return valve and waits at the main starting valve, which control air holds firmly shut. ▶️ On the start command: The pilot valve vents the closing air. The main starting valve opens, and air fills the manifold from the cylinder six end. But no cylinder receives air yet. 🔄 The distributor takes over: Driven by the engine itself, its rotating cam sends pilot air to one cylinder starting valve at a time. The pilot air pushes the opening piston down, the valve lifts, and starting air enters the cylinder, pushing the piston down. Valves open in firing order, here 1-5-3-4-2-6, so the thrust is spread around the crankshaft. 🔥 Combustion takes over: Once the engine is turning fast enough, the start command is removed. Pilot air is cut, the starting valves close and vent, and high-pressure fuel reaches each fuel valve. Fuel is injected, and the engine runs on its own combustion. 📌 Remember: Control air commands, starting air does the work. ⚠️ This animation is a schematic, not an approved start procedure. Always follow the manufacturer’s manual and your vessel’s procedures. 👉 Follow Maritime Career Academy for more. #MaritimeCareerAcademy #MarineEngineering #MarineEngineer #TwoStrokeEngine #StartingAir #ControlAir #DieselEngine #EngineRoom #Seafarer #SeafarerLife #MerchantNavy #ShipEngineer #MaritimeTraining #MarineMachinery #MaritimeEducation
