You typed
You typed "wikipedia.org" and hit enter. In under a second, five different protocols passed your request between them like a relay team 👇 Your browser has no idea where Wikipedia actually lives. Computers don't use names, they use numbers. 1️⃣ DNS: the internet's phone book. It turns "wikipedia.org" into an address like 185.15.58.224. 2️⃣ IP: the delivery address. Every router reads the label on each packet and passes it to the next one. Packets can take different paths, so some get lost and others arrive in the wrong order. 3️⃣ TCP: the fixer. It starts with a three-way handshake (SYN → SYN-ACK → ACK), puts everything back in order, and resends anything that went missing. 4️⃣ TLS: the lock. TCP is reliable but not private. TLS checks the server's certificate to make sure it's really Wikipedia, both sides agree on shared keys, and anyone watching only sees scrambled data. 5️⃣ HTTP: the actual question. "GET me the homepage." The server answers, and your browser starts drawing the page. On the way out, your request gets wrapped layer by layer: HTTP → TLS → TCP → IP. On the server, it's unwrapped in reverse. Bonus: HTTP/3 swaps TCP for QUIC, which runs on UDP and has its own reliable delivery and encryption built in. Different process, same jobs. Every number in this video is real. I ran dig, traceroute and the TLS handshake from my own machine. Which one surprised you most? 👀 Save this for your next interview and send it to someone who still thinks the internet is "just Wi-Fi." #networking #softwareengineering #computerscience #webdevelopment #codinglife
