@echoesofliberty.gg: Peter, Sue, and Christine Hanson boarded Flight 175 together. Then Peter’s two calls gave his father a warning no one could stop. On September 11, 2001, the family was flying from Boston to Los Angeles. By the end of the morning, Peter’s father, Lee, would be listening to a warning from the plane, and the next call would answer only part of what it meant. The Hansons lived in Groton, Massachusetts, and were traveling to California to visit relatives. Their ordinary family plan still had one more stop in mind: Disneyland, but that plan would soon collide with a different kind of itinerary. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum records that Christine was two and a half years old and taking her first airplane trip. That detail makes the photograph feel like a record of a journey that had not yet changed—until Peter called. At 8:52 a.m., Peter reached Lee from United Flight 175. He said the cockpit had been taken over, an attendant had been stabbed, and the plane was making strange moves; he also told Lee to identify the flight as 175 from Boston to Los Angeles, but Peter’s second call was still to come. Lee relayed the warning to the Easton, Connecticut, police department, as the 9/11 Commission Report records. Eight minutes after the first call, Peter called again, and the warning became more specific. At 9:00 a.m., Peter said the situation was getting worse. He told Lee that he did not think the pilot was flying and that the hijackers might take the plane into a building, leaving one question hanging over the final seconds of the call. The line ended abruptly after Peter’s repeated words, “Oh my God.” StoryCorps later recorded Lee’s account that he heard what sounded like a woman screaming before the connection disappeared; what Lee heard next would become part of the timeline. At 9:03:11 a.m., the Commission’s timeline says United 175 struck the World Trade Center’s South Tower. Peter, Sue, and Christine were among all those killed aboard the aircraft, but one commonly repeated detail still needs correction. One detail needs careful wording: the Memorial’s family account identifies Christine as the youngest of the eight children killed on 9/11, not as the youngest of all 2,977 victims. The correction leaves a more important question: what do the calls actually preserve? Peter’s two calls did not stop the aircraft, but they preserved a direct warning from inside it. The family photograph shows the Hansons before takeoff; the calls explain why this portrait is also tied to one of the clearest surviving records of Flight 175’s final minutes. If someone you loved sent a warning like Peter’s, would you first contact authorities or keep the line open as long as possible—and what would your family likely have done? 📚 Sources: • 9/11 Memorial & Museum • The 9/11 Commission Report • StoryCorps • 9/11 Memorial Museum Collection
