I love that you’re fighting back on this! People have been doing all kinds of exercise for many years that don’t involve heavy lifting and I’ve been an extremely good shape and while there’s evidence that heavy lifting protects your bone health, there’s also evidence that exercise in general protect protects you! Keep going❤️

I have a patient who developed osteoporosis from breastfeeding and broke her spine lifting her baby out of the crib. Falling wont be your only problem if you dont lift weights and maintain robust bone health. No single exercise can be everything for you and thats nothing against pilates.

I recently learned that it doesn't even take a fall. If you have bad enough osteoporosis you can get a fracture just standing in place. Pilates is awesome and has so many benefits, but it cannot replace lifting heavy weights for bone health.

remember ladies, if you aren’t lifting once a week by the time you’re 40, you start losing bone density rapidly. Stay strong and healthy 🩷

Guys if done correctly pilates also involves progressive resistance from graded bodyweight exercises and spring loading. Its not as much potential resistance as with weight training but has other benefits for mobility and stability that arent as available from weight training. A mix of both is ideal but pilates done properly with consistency across time and advacing difficulty makes a person miles ahead of average in terms of building strength and bine density for longevity. Even consistent uphill walking builds bone density.
