In a novel like Crime and Punishment, you have to take the “peaceful” moments when you can get them as a sort of mental rest not only for Raskolnikov but for us as the reader. One of those moments came for me during one of Rodya’s many aimless wanderings throughout the city. Here, he stops on the bridge and spends time looking at a chapel. It’s one of the few times so far in the novel where something actually brings him some solace and takes him back to a more innocent and peaceful time when he would stop and stare at it on his way home during his college years. I also believe it’s one of the early glimpses Dostoyesky gives us and Rodya about his future spiritual awakening. Ultimately, there is something out there bigger than himself that won't necessarily blot out the repercussions of his decisions, but will bring him peace and the ability to continue forward. This is one of those scenes I probably read through, and didn’t really think much of it during my first read. However, knowing the story and what comes next, I’m able to notice these types of moments more and see how they play into the bigger story that Dostoyevsky created. I hope you lovelies are enjoying my thoughts on my reread of Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky! If so, stay tuned for more of them soon! - - - - - #Dostoyevsky #darkacademia #classicliterature #crimeandpunishment #annotations Fyodor dostoevsky , russian literature, annotated books, penguin classics, coffee and books, dark academia aesthetic , favorite books,
