As a special education teacher, I do not believe that ODD is real. At least not as a disorder. I think a lot has to do with parenting, there is such a thing as pathological demand avoidance, which is similar, but not the same, but there’s a whole lot of debate as to whether ODD is real.

I think if a parent denies the recommendation of placement in the self contained classroom, they shouldn't be eligible to receive the protection the IEP provides.

Elem. school front office worker here🙋🏻‍♀️CALL THE PARENT EVERY DAY. "Hi we need your support with ___, please come as soon as possible." Do this every day. The parent will crack. I've seen it done 3 times in the past year.

If parents refuse special education services, then he is treated like a regular education student and can be suspended and expelled the same way. No other due process or accommodations must be made outside the regular documentation done for all students. Gather the evidence and then expel.

Hot take but parents shouldn’t be able to opt out of those services if their child meets requirements

These are the parents who don't want their child with "those kids" not realizing their child IS those kids.

i just don’t understand why parents of children like this don’t do anything and just allow their children to terrorize teachers and other children

A student in 1st grade pulled the rolling chair out from under a teacher and put her in a neck brace. Instead of pulling him out of normal school they put him in a new class. Guess who’s? Teacher spent so much time dealing with him the daily bullying I went through from another student including physical went completely unnoticed

I was signed on as a permanent sub for a kindergarten class at the beginning of the year. I had one kid that was an absolute nightmare, and genuinely needed to be removed from the class and given 1-on-1 education and intensive therapy. He was constantly in and out of my class due to his behavior; would violently attack me, my aide, the principal, the counselor, and any other sub that came into the room. Constant screaming tantrums, intentional distruption (barking at me, yelling, taking other student materials, causing arguments between students, etc.), and violent attacks sometimes at random. Admin would do nothing. Parents acted concerned, but ultimately did nothing. I quit that job because of that kid. My final straw was when he stomped on my foot and cracked my toenail because he couldn't get into the prize box due to poor behavior throughout the week. Admin did nothing. Not even a concerned "are you okay?". Right after quitting, I got another permanent sub job for a high school position. I have plenty of distruption, but nothing to that kid's extreme. I even have a kid that's on parole, and she acts 100x better than he did in my class.

Email and call the parents. Not jsut every day, but after every incident. Cc the administration on these emails. Include the superintendent if you want. Paper trail! Legal issue! They’re required to respond appropriately and it also covers you if something happens where another student is inured.

At this point he’s obviously the problem. Expel him and parents can homeschool. Idk how to go about that but that’s just so unfair to everyone else.

if parents decline, make it the parents' problem. Call them every time class/learning is disrupted for the rest of the class- he/she now has lost their right to be there. Homeschooling is always an option for parents who decline services. Districts need to stop equating students in desks with money for the district. In the end, it bites the school in the butt because test scores will fall.

Of yeah, my child would NOT be in that class. He needs to be removed. If parents refuse to remove him, the school needs to remove the child from the school
