The desert bighorn sheep is the undisputed king of the Mojave Desert cliffs. In Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park, these incredible animals move across near-vertical sandstone walls with a confidence that seems impossible. Their specialized hooves have hard outer rims for gripping rock and soft, rubbery centers that cling to even the tiniest ledges, allowing them to reach places where predators simply can’t follow. Male bighorns, called rams, are famous for their massive curling horns, which can weigh up to 30 pounds—more than all the bones in a human arm. During the breeding season, rival rams compete by charging headfirst into one another at speeds of nearly 20 miles per hour. Their thick skulls and powerful neck muscles absorb these tremendous impacts with surprisingly little injury. Females, called ewes, have much smaller horns and usually travel with their lambs in family groups. Lambs are astonishing climbers almost from birth and can scramble over steep rocky slopes within days, learning the survival skills they’ll need for life in the desert. Despite living in one of North America’s hottest environments, desert bighorn sheep are perfectly adapted to the Mojave. They feed on grasses, desert shrubs, cacti, and wildflowers, getting much of the moisture they need from the plants they eat. They can also withstand remarkable dehydration before making their way to precious water sources. Valley of Fire is one of the best places in Nevada to see these magnificent animals. They’re most active during the cooler hours of early morning and late afternoon, often appearing along rocky hillsides or crossing park roads. Their tan coats blend almost perfectly with the red sandstone, making them surprisingly difficult to spot until they move. The desert bighorn sheep is Nevada’s official state animal and a true symbol of endurance. Watching one stand effortlessly atop the towering red cliffs of Valley of Fire is a reminder that evolution has produced some of the most extraordinary athletes on Earth. #bighorn #mammals #fullcurl #sheep #dinodoug
