Yeah this is why calico cats are the way that they are. Calicos are strictly female unless they’re XXY, because the black and orange are located on the two X chromosomes. But because of the barr bodies and the way that the cells split for mitosis, it’s a coin flip for which color it’ll be to duplicate. Thus you get patches of each mosaic cell :p

i’m an XX SRY+ male. i experienced normal male development with the exception of being sterile. when i did my genetic testing they determined i had cellular mosaicism - in roughly 50% of my cells, the maternal X is turned off and the paternal X (carrying the SRY gene) is active. In the other 50% of the cells, the paternal X is turned off and the maternal X is active

When I took Introduction to Genetics and learned about random X-chromosome inactivation *lyonization* and how it results in genetic mosaicism, my mind was BLOWN!!! 🤯😂 But what really made me laugh was learning about the SRY gene on the Y chromosome and its role in initiating male sex differentiation. I couldn’t get over the fact that the gene responsible for initiating male development is literally called “SRY.” All I could think was that the Y chromosome was apologizing for making someone a man. AHAHAHA! 😭😂
