it doesn't create cold air, it removes heat from air and transfers it to outside. it's all about heat transfer. cold does not exist, heat exists. that's why it's cooler at night outside, no sunshine=less heat= cooler temperatures. an ice cube melts because it's absorbing heat around it. cold is merely absence of heat.

the first "refrigerator" w kept food cold with a block of ice, ice was doing same thing as the gas does, absorbs the heat inside the box. hence the term "ice box". drawback= ice melts needing replacement. refrigerant cycles and does not need replacement, unless it leaking.
