That’s the biggest thing I worked through in EMDR. I could have done everything right or everything wrong, either way I was still assaulted. And I still deserve kindness and gentleness. I made a lot of progress once I truly let myself believe that

I was 13 and would sneak out to hang out with grown men. I accepted that yeah I put myself in a bad situation but I was a child and that helped heal soooooo much

I found it helpful to think of the guilt as part of the self-care process. It’s not that I feel guilty because it was my fault and I am bad, I feel guilty so that I prevent it happening again. In other words, my subconscious cares about protecting me so much that it wants to make sure I am prepared next time. It’s not my subconscious‘s fault that that’s the only solution it has for me.

It was my fault that I chose to take a drag off their cigarette. It wasn't my fault that I was 6 and believed that I'd get in trouble for smoking if I didn't do what they wanted

I was shocked to hear that someone working at institutional mental health facilities was actually taught that a victim believing it was their fault was good for them because it gave them a sense they could do something in a situation where they felt powerless. I can grasp some little nuance of that being right but mostly it seemed now like that dude was blocking recourse to justice by weaponizing victim-blaming.
