@lissymyers: Alfa gal syndrome Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a serious, potentially life-threatening allergic condition triggered by a tick bite. It causes the immune system to react to alpha-gal, a sugar molecule found in most mammals (such as beef, pork, lamb, and venison) as well as products derived from them like dairy and gelatin. Causes • Tick Bites: In the United States, AGS is primarily linked to the bite of the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum), though other ticks like the blacklegged tick have occasionally been implicated. • Mechanism: The tick injects the alpha-gal molecule into the skin, prompting the body to produce specific IgE antibodies. Future exposure to mammalian products triggers an allergic response. Symptoms Unlike typical food allergies that strike within minutes, AGS reactions are delayed, usually appearing 2 to 6 hours (sometimes up to 10 hours) after eating red meat or mammalian byproducts. Symptoms include: • Hives, itching, or skin rashes • Swelling of the lips, throat, tongue, or eyelids • Gastrointestinal distress (stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea) • Respiratory issues (shortness of breath or wheezing) • Anaphylaxis: A severe, life-threatening reaction causing airway closure or a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
